McALLEN – It didn’t take David De Leon and his wife long to talk about their health and fitness options when COVID-19 reared its ugly head in South Texas.

“My wife and I are very active in exercising and being healthy and fit,” the 30-year-old McAllen resident said. “When everything started happening it became more of a challenge to go to the gym, so for safety we decided that working out from the house was much safer than putting ourselves in any type of medical risk at a public facility or a gym.”

The couple purchased an FT2 Functional Trainer, a home gym that has a design which integrates an Olympic bar and weight stacks. De Leon said the benefits from the machine and being able to work from home were quickly realized.

I mean everyone seems to want to grow their own food this year,” Tom Estabrook, of Estabrook’s Garden Center, said.Estabrook’s is selling in one week the number of seed packets they would typically sell in a season.“I think we are seeing a resurgence in new gardeners for sure. If there’s one thing that is precious in this whole scenario is that we are having more time with our families, so seed starting is a great way to start out with the kids to get them growing something,” Estabrook said.Broadway Gardens in South Portland is seeing a similar trend.“We’ve been selling a lot of the seed starter soil and all the trays and the domes and … Read More

Three issues, namely the standardising of trading hours, selling meals-to-go and cigarettes, were some of the many pressing issues discussed at the Multi Agency Command Centre at Garden Route District Municipality over the past two days.

Here is what you need to know:

Trading hours

It was decided to standardise the trading hours of shops that trade with food. The decision, taken at the COVID-19 Garden Route District Multi Agency Command Centre, aims to reduce the number of people on the road and visiting shops. Trading hours will be between 08:00 and 18:00, daily.

Meals-to-go

Selling of ready-made hot meals is prohibited. No business, food outlet, including supermarkets (like Spar, Woolworths, Checkers Pick ‘ Pay, etc.), restaurants or cafés will be allowed to provide any hot prepared meals, meals-to-go or take aways to any member of the public.

Cigarettes
