We’re spending way more time at home these days, which means it’s more important than ever for our living spaces to bring us joy and comfort. But if you’re like me, you’ve begun to notice ― maybe even fixate on ― imperfections like run down furniture and outdated wallpaper.

Since you’re stuck at home anyway, now might be a good opportunity to work on a project or two that will spruce up your home and take your mind off the coronavirus pandemic. What is a home improvement loan?

A home improvement loan is an unsecured personal loan that you use to cover the costs of home upgrades or fixes. Lenders provide home improvement loans for up to $100,000 with rates typically between 6% and 36%.

Because you don’t put up your house as collateral for the loan, your rate is based on your credit and income information. If you can’t repay the loan, your credit will take the hit.

Should you get a home improvement loan?

A home improvement loan can make sense if you don’t have a lot of equity in your home or you don’t want to use your home as collateral.

Ideally, you can qualify for a low rate and monthly payments that you can afford for the life of the loan. Payments on home improvement loans are usually fixed, which means you can reliably schedule monthly payments into

Websites

While many social-networking sites are not much more than platforms for chatter, others have evolved into fantastic tools for renovation, build ing, and decorating projects. Designers, for instance, are starting to use private Pinterest boards to share ideas with clients by pinning images of paint colors, fabric samples, and more. “The boards keep us organized and create a dynamic dialogue,” says designer Jayne Michaels.

Dering Hall helps homeowners find interior designers. Browse hundreds of portfolios to choose a firm, or, if you’re just looking for inspiration, scroll through photo galleries organized by room and style. Another site, Cultivate, focuses on kitchen redos. You can also crowdsource a solution for a renovation problem in one of its lively, themed forums.

Interactive maps on Porch allow you to search for local architects and trade professionals, view their work, and even find out whether your neighbors or Facebook friends have

When you renovate or upgrade your home, there are a few things to consider before deciding the best way to spend your renovation dollars. For example, will the project make your home more functional or an overall better place to live? If you have four bedrooms and one bathroom, adding a second bathroom might tremendously improve the general living conditions of your home.

There’s also the consideration of keeping everything in a good state of repair and replacing worn-out components of your home. A roof replacement won’t necessarily improve the functionality of your home (unless the old one is falling apart), but it can give you the peace of mind that you won’t have to worry about leaks anytime soon.

Last, but certainly not least, is the issue of cost versus value added. Many popular home renovation projects are expensive. The National Association of Realtors estimates that:

Pensacola will soon be the second home of a popular Milton home improvement store.

Bob Hanley is planning a soft opening Saturday for HBM, his discounted home improvement retail store. HBM will open at 3840 W. Navy Blvd inside of an approximate 5,000 square-foot space.

Hanley said he’s already filling the building from wall to wall with name brand pressure washers, blowers, grills, appliances and more.

Social, mobile key digital channels for home improvement advice

January 21, 2014

For brands and retailers in the home improvement sector, ecommerce was not an option in the initial phase of digital commerce, but improving technology and shifting consumer behaviors are changing that, according to a new eMarketer report, “Home Improvement: The Digital Tool Kit Inspires Do-It-Yourselfers.”

Digital transactions for home improvement products remain rare, making up a tiny portion of the whole—albeit one that is growing rapidly. But digital channels play an important role in the research, planning and shopping phases of home improvement—wherever and however a final sale occurs. As in almost every vertical, the path to purchase is increasingly an amalgam of digital and real-world experiences.
